The impact of social media on our youth is outstanding anywhere from bullying, sexting, and self-esteem. The competition for followers and likes is sometimes not worth the race… but more importantly we should be concerned with keeping our kids safe. Contact us to find out more information on social media workshops designed to address all of these issues.
Here are a few tips to share with your tweens and teens:
1. Passwords: Use a strong password and a different one for each account. Also make sure your phone has a password so you are protected twice!
2. Be careful about what you share. First let me suggest you not post everything in real time and secondly don’t post detailed information about yourself.
3. Don’t allow people to tag you in a post without permission. Review what gets attached to your account. The internet is a huge public record remember that.
4. Think before you post/forward. If you are upset, don’t like someone, whatever the case maybe sending certain pics or information can get you in trouble that you don’t need.
5. If someone is bullying or targeting you reach out to a trusted family member or teacher as soon as possible!
6. Lastly, parents its OK to monitor your child’s accounts no matter how old they are.
If they are under 18 then they are your responsibility monitor what they post and who follows them and don’t feel guilty about it!
